Q: How did the Penokee Range get its name?
A: Penokee is the mis-read word for Pewaukee, which mean's iron-bearing land; found in the notes of Whittlesey when he was marking and mapping the area.
A: There are many. Not all of them are high, but they are all scenic and interesting. Morgan Falls, in the Chequamegon near Cable; Bond Falls just across the Michigan border not far from Eagle River, St. Germain, and Boulder Junction; Copper Falls State Park near Mellen; Amnicon and Pattison Falls near Superior. Many excellent waterfalls in n.e. Wisconsin in Marinette County.
A: The Tick Festival, actually Tick Racing, is held annually, in May, at the
Oxbo
Resort, in Oxbo, Wisconsin. Oxbo is located about 16 miles west of Fifield on
Highway 70. (Fifield is located 4 miles south of Park Falls on Highway 13).
Pageantry, food, ticks with names, ticks that don't make it get hammered, ticks
available for sale, etc. For a marvelous summary of the goings on, see our features
section, "Ticks Race in Northwoods Derby," by Madison's Wisconsin State
Journal Columnist, Susan Lampert Smith, excerpted from her book, Greetings
From Wisconsin. You'll find book ordering info there, and in our Reference
pages, too.
